Welcome to the Supernatural Summer 2007 Gen Fic Exchange!

After this season is over, it will be a long, terrible summer without our boys to entertain us, and there's no telling what trouble we'll get into without Winchesters to occupy our minds.

The only thing we can do to stave off the darkness, of course, is write fic.

1. This exchange is for Supernatural gen fic. RPF (real-person fic) is not allowed. Quibbling about the definition of "gen" is dead boring and leads only to headaches, so we're just going to say that it means stories that do not focus on romantic or sexual relationships. Use your brain. If you're not sure your idea fits, email us and ask. We are opinionated. We'll tell you.

All other types of stories and genres are welcome, anything from the darkest angst to the wackiest crack, from tales about the Winchesters as precocious moppets to tales about them as curmudgeonly retirees in matched rocking chairs, monster-of-the-week adventures and character studies, brotherly (motherly, fatherly, sisterly, hunterly...) bonding and fighting, case-fics and AUs, funerals and prank wars and everything in between.

2. This is an anonymous fic exchange. That means you will be assigned to write a shiny gift for somebody, and somebody else will be assigned to write a shiny gift for you. It will all be very secret and hush-hush, and we (the mods) will post all of the stories. It also means that you must be willing and able to write a story based on somebody else's prompts and tastes as submitted in the sign-ups below.

3. This is the schedule we'll follow:

~ Sign-ups are open from now until April 15. Please sign up by commenting on this post.

~ Assignments will be sent out by May 1. You must provide a working email address in order to receive your assignment.

~ Stories will be due June 20. That gives you just over a month and half to write. When you're done, you'll send the finished story to us at spnsummergen @ gmail.com.

~ We (the mods) will start posting the stories anonymously on June 21. We'll probably post one or two stories per day until they're all up.

4. All stories must be at least 1000 words in length, and they must be spell-checked and proofread for grammar and punctuation. If you can't do that yourself, find a beta who can. We reserve the right to send stories riddled with errors and mistakes back to the authors for cleaning up. Because this is an exchange, the last thing we want to do is give somebody a story that's thrown together carelessly. That will make us grumpy.

Got it? Good. Now for the fun stuff: Sign-ups!

To sign-up, leave a comment to this post using the guidelines and format below. If you don't sign up using these guidelines and this format, we're going to take it as a sign that you haven't read the rules and mock you gleefully because of it. If you'd love to write or receive a story about particular characters who are not Sam & Dean, make sure that's clear from your sign-up.

About the prompts: You must provide at least three (3) story prompts, and you can provide as many as six (6) if you want to give your author more options. This should go without saying, but remember all of your prompts should be shipless; requesting a pairing story for a gen fic exchange is pretty damn silly, and we will point and laugh. You may request crossovers, but please limit yourself to only one (1) crossover prompt, as those are much harder to match with willing authors.

The prompts can be as general or specific as you like, but do try to leave some leeway for your author. Authors are not required to follow the letter of the prompts to the last detail; there is always room for flexibility and interpretation, and we're certainly not going to stop somebody who has a brilliant idea from running with it. The prompts give the author ideas for what stories and topics you love, so keep that in mind when you're writing them.

About the preferences: This should also go without saying, but just in case: when specifying what you prefer to write and receive, make sure those preferences are informative for this exchange. In other words, specifying that you prefer not to receive "het, rimming, incest, mpreg, babyfic, BDSM and bestiality" is completely useless, because this is a gen fic exchange and nobody is going to write those things anyway, especially not when they're writing from your prompts. The idea is to give both the mods making the assignments and the author writing for you an idea what kind of story best fits you within the contest of this exchange, not within the context of every fanfic squick you've ever had.

Here's how you sign up:

Name: [livejournal.com profile] ignipes
Email: ignipes @ livejournal.com
Three to six story prompts:
1. Pre-series story about the boys battling something evil while John is away.
2. Anything to do with boys being locked in cages.
3. Harry Potter crossover in which the boys go to Hogwarts.
4. The boys and/or various characters swapping stories at the roadhouse.
5. The Annual Hunters versus Demons softball game.
6. AU in which Sam is a lawyer and Dean is a detective and they fight crime together.

Scenarios and stories you'd rather not receive: Darkness and woe and bleak hopelessness. Also, stories about pickles, demon-POV stories, and plotless character studies, deathfic, extreme violence, any kind of character bashing.
Scenarios and stories you'd prefer to write: Humor, case-stories, plot-oriented stories, brotherly banter and bonding, happy endings, crack, zombies (what? it's a genre).
Any crossovers you're willing to write? Dukes of Hazzard, The A-Team, My Little Ponies

See? Easy as pie. If you have any questions, drop us a line here or email us at spnsummergen @ gmail.com.

We'll make a second post soon with story submission information and guidelines. Also, if you don't want to commit to anything now but you might be willing to serve as a pinch-hitter or beta-reader later on, let us know.

Have fun!
