Hello, intrepid Summergenners! Hope we're all weathering masking and social distancing like champs!

Small tweak to the schedule: to be sure we have enough submissions to take us through the first week of posting, we will begin posting the gifts on JULY 5th, which is also the final day to get your submissions in on-time, unless you have already contacted us to request an extension. Any questions or concerns, drop us a line in the comments below or email us a supernaturalsummergen @ gmail . com

We've got some tasty things waiting in the wings...cheers!

Well, here we are! We thought we'd be lamenting the last of our show, but COVID-19 had other plans. Instead of dodging the finale, we're dodging six-feet around each other. So let's make some fanworks to lift our spirits!

A little history for newcomers: Summergen was initially conceived as a gift-exchange event to kill time over Hellatus; now, it's become a beloved thing in its own right and we couldn't be more grateful for all the wonderful participants and the fanworks created. Y'all are the best. How much longer Summergen will carry on? Who knows. Guess 'til we've all decided the sun has set on it. But until then? BREAK OUT THE FEELS AND THE FLIP-FLOPS. LET'S DO THIS THING.

For 2020's calendar and an event overview, click here. It contains important info. PLEASE READ. Gifts can be fic and/or art (hand-drawn, digital, photomanips and graphics). You need only pick one prompt and create one gift.

Okay, people, we're already getting submissions, so I guess it's time to make this post! Don't freak out--you still have until July 15 to complete your Summergen story, but I know some of you are early birds (yay!), you've already written that sucker and are eager to send it in, so here's the how:

Submission Guidelines

-You must submit your story in .txt or .rtf format. We cannot accept .doc or .docx files.

-Your story must already be formatted for posting on lj, including all necessary html tags (such as for centering, bolding, etc.). Here's a cool post that will tell you how to do that.

-If your fic is longer than 9,000 words, you'll have to split it up into sections, each of which is 9,000 words or fewer, because lj has a word limit. Please send the sections to us as separate files or indicate very clearly within your story where you want the split(s). Remember, your story must be at least 1,000 words, but there is no upward limit; it can be as long as you like.

-No fancy formatting such as special fonts or colors, lest they be unreadable for others due to their journal style or the device they're reading on. The other usual formatting options lj allows, such as bold, italics, or font size, are fine, though. It might be a good idea to first test your coding by posting it as a private entry on your own lj exactly as you plan to submit it--this will give you a chance to fix any errors before it's too late.

-You may include art with your fic! Send us the file in .jpg, .png, or .gif format (but send the whole file, not just a link to it), and clearly indicate where each image should go in your story.

-Please have your fic betaed! Stories riddled with errors will be returned.

-Do not code web-bugs or counters into your story.

-You must include the following header in both your story document and in the e-mail you send to us. Here is the header information to include:

Title:
Author:
(We'll remove this before your work is posted, but we still need you to include it.)
Recipient:
Rating:
Warnings:
(not optional - see note below)
Author's Notes: (optional)

Summary:

Ratings: you can use any rating system you like, as long as the meaning is clear.

Warnings are at your discretion. You can choose not to warn, but do include the field--just say "choose not to warn," or "none" if you don't feel your fic requires any warnings. Some people nowadays are also putting warnings behind a spoiler cut (here's how to do that) if they feel the warnings or other tags might spoil parts of the fic; feel free to do that, too.

If you're having a hard time coming up with your summary, you can use the prompt you're working from, use a quote from the work, etc., but please do include something in the summary field.

You can include more fields if you like. Just remember not to reveal your identity. For example, if you feel naming your beta will give away who you are, please don't!

Also, please give your story file a name a bit more unique than "summergenfic.txt". You wouldn't believe how many files of the same name we get each year! It really makes downloading them all a pain in the butt. (Yes, I know, it's easy to change the file name. But we have 90 files--you've got one. Be nice, okay?)

You can only submit your fic once, so make sure it's right before you send it in! That said, the earlier the better--it'll be easier on the mods if we don't get all the fics on deadline day, and we'd like to start posting fics as soon as possible. We will e-mail you to let you know when we've received your story, but if you submit on or close to the deadline, don't expect to receive that acknowledgement instantly--we're going to be busy!

Once again, a link to the FAQs. Any other questions? Ask in the comments, or e-mail us at supernaturalsummergen @ gmail . com (remove the spaces).

Do you feel that? That's the approach of the start of Summergen fic posting--it's getting closer! YES!
[identity profile] brightly-lit.livejournal.com
I've been seeing a lot of posts by people excited about the idea of participating in Summergen but nervous about the prospect of writing an exchange fic, writing to a set of prompts, etc. [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver made an excellent post last year that addresses the subject and many other things you may be wondering, so I will here quote liberally from it (with her permission ;-) ). Please read all this!--especially the section titled "Some advice for when you receive your prompts."

What NOT to write )

Some advice for when you receive your prompts )

Any questions? )

Most of all, if you get a prompt set you dislike or can't work with, we beg you not to post publicly about it. Think how your recipient will feel if she sees a post like that. Write to us instead, and we will arrange a trade or other solution.

So, in sum: prompts are just jumping-off points to prompt and inspire you, and if you find you absolutely can't work with the prompts you're given, there are solutions!

Again, here is your sign-up form, here is the userinfo page, and here are the FAQs. It's fun seeing all the sign-ups roll in ....

That grand time of year is upon us, and I get to be part of modding it this year! (YESSSS!)

So, since we’re getting a late start, let’s keep this short and sweet. This is an anonymous gen fiction exchange.

The idea? Write stories so that we’ll all have plenty of SPN to get us through this desert known as hellatus.

You will each fill out a form describing what you can write for a recipient and what you would like to receive from your author, we’ll match you up and send out your assignments as soon as possible, then you’ll get to writing! You’ll have one month to write your story, which must be at least 1,000 words long. This is an anonymous exchange, so the mods will post your stories for you--one for each weekday until all stories have been posted.

At the end, we will reveal the authors of each story. Here are the dates:

Sign-ups: May 23-June 6
Assignments sent out: June 15 or earlier
Stories due: July 15. You will be granted an automatic, one-week grace period, but all fics must be received by July 22, unless you have requested an extension.
Deadline for withdrawal and requests for extensions: July 15

We will begin posting stories as soon as we have enough to post one each weekday throughout the summer, so if you get done early, awesome! Send it on in, and chances are you’ll get an early post date.

No changes can be made to your fic after final submission, so make sure it is edited/betaed and ready to post when you submit it.
If you would like more detailed information, please check out the userinfo page and/or the FAQs.

Submission guidelines and other timely information will be posted as they become necessary, but we will be adhering pretty closely to how this exchange proceeded in previous years, so if you want to learn more about it right now, have a look at previous years’ posts. (The ‘rules’ and ‘faq’ tags are especially helpful.)

Ready to sign up? Fill out the form found here. You can also pimp this exchange to your buddies! Pimpage banner available here ...

Next step: wait for your assignment, to be sent out June 15 or earlier (as soon as we can match all submissions to authors). Once you receive your assignment, e-mail the mods at supernaturalsummergen at gmail dot com to confirm you’ve received it, then get to writing! You’ll have one month to finish your story.

Not sure about that kind of commitment? Then you can be one of our pinch hitters! Join this community, [livejournal.com profile] spn_genpinchhit, which will post pinch-hit requests as they become available.

Finally: sit back and read the stories as they’re posted, enjoy, comment, and generally bask in the wonder that is summergen!

Fandom, we are go for liftoff. Repeat, Summergen is a go for 2014 ....

Your Prompts:
You must submit at least three prompts, and may submit up to six--more is better. Tell us something you’d like to see in a fic you aren’t going to write yourself.

Try to keep your prompts relatively brief and leave room for your writer’s imagination to roam. You can get as creative and specific with your prompts as you’d like, but please try to include at least two prompts that the average Supernatural viewer would be able to write for. That is, if you’d like include a crossover prompt, feel free, but please limit it to only one, and write at least four prompts.

Keep in mind that your prompts are open to interpretation. Your writer may do something different from what you pictured with the prompt, and you should respect their artistic choices. Please remember to comment on the story written for you and thank the author for it, when the time comes.

Your Story:
It must be a minimum of 1,000 words, and there is no maximum length, except what you’re able to write in the allotted time. Keep in mind your own schedule, writing speed, and RL challenges to make sure you can honor the commitment you make to Summergen by signing up. In other words, plan a shorter, simpler fic if you’re pressed for time or write slowly. You don’t have to write your magnum opus! Although if you do have the time and are so inspired, go for it! A lot of truly great fan fiction of all lengths and genres has come out of Summergen.

You can write anything you’d like to write, as long as it is gen and there is a solid connection to at least one of your recipient’s prompts.

Go nuts. Get creative. Let your SPN-flag fly free and help your fellow fans make Hellatus into a fun-filled hiatus instead!

F.A.Q.

Q: What is Gen?

By "gen" we simply mean stories where the focus is not on romantic or sexual relationships, although those relationships may be a small component of the story, if the relationship has happened in canon. (i.e., John/Mary or Sam/Jess is allowed if it’s not the focus of the story, but not Sam/Cas or Dean/Gadreel.) If you're not sure your idea fits, comment and ask, or take a look at last year's master list to get an idea about what's appropriate.

Q: Why can’t I write stories about Sam/Dean, Dean/Cas, or other pairings in my Summergen fic?
See above. No slash is allowed of any pairing. Many, many other challenges allow or focus on slash. Summergen is for lovers of gen fic, which does not allow a focus on romantic/sexual relationships of any kind: het, M/M, femmeslash or otherwise.

Again, please note: No Wincest, Destiel, or any other pairing is allowed. Please don’t make a request for such a story or write it into your story--not even at a squint. Summergen is for gen stories only.

Q: Can I sign up if I defaulted/withdrew in a previous Summergen?

A: Withdrew, yes. Defaulted, no. If you withdrew properly (i.e. you emailed the mods to let us know you weren't able to complete your submission), no problem. If you just vanished without a trace, or you didn't contact us until after we assigned a pinch-hitter, of course you can't sign up again. Why should we trust you not to do that again?

Q: Can I request or write stories about minor and recurring characters, not just the Winchesters?

A: Absolutely, yes. Please do! Any character that has appeared on the show is fair game.

Q: Can I write stories about Jared, Jensen or other actors on the show?
A: No, RPF (real person fiction) is not allowed in Summergen. However, you may include fictionalized versions of real people that fit into Supernatural canon (e.g., a time travel story where Sam and Dean meet Abraham Lincoln, or if your story is based on The French Mistake, you can use the fictionalized versions of the actors that appeared in that episode).

If you have any further questions about this, feel free to ask.

Q: Will there be a separate sign-up post for pinch-hitters?

A: No. Instead there is a separate community for pinch-hitters, [livejournal.com profile] spn_genpinchhit. If you're interested in pinch-hitting, please join that community. Note: you have to join, not just watch, because all pinch-hit requests will be locked.

Q: Can I sign up if I don't have a livejournal?

A: Yes. The sign-up form asks for a link to your journal, but if you don't have an LJ you can give a link to your Dreamwidth, Tumblr or whatever. Or if you don't have any kind of online journal you can still sign up. However, you do need a valid email address and you can't sign up without one.

Q: Are we allowed to write our recipient multiple fics based on their scenarios/prompts, or only one fic?

A: You can submit only one fic for your recipient as part of the anonymous exchange. But it can be as long as you like (the minimum length is 1,000 words), can be multiple chapters, and you can mix multiple prompts in one fic if you’d like. If you really think you'll have time to write more than one fic, please sign up as a pinch-hitter. These are the people who step in to write/create for any participants who have to drop out: if you pinch-hit you'll get a new set of prompts to choose from, and you'll be a hero!

Q: Can I thank my beta in my author's notes, or is that giving away my identity?

A: That's kind of a judgment call. Don’t do it if it will be a dead give-away of your identity. Otherwise, feel free, or consider something like “Many thanks to my beta, L—you know who you are.” Beta credit can always be given later, after the reveal.

Ready to sign up? Here's the form.

Schedule and complete rules are on the user info page.

If you have any other questions, please comment or p.m. one of the mods. [livejournal.com profile] septembers_coda is your happy point-person and willing correspondent.

Assignments for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen will be going out any day now! A new post will be made in this community once all assignments have gone out. Please don't contact the mods asking where your assignment is until after that post goes up.

YOU MUST REPLY TO YOUR ASSIGNMENT EMAIL TO LET THE MODS KNOW YOU HAVE RECEIVED IT.

If you don't reply, and we can't contact you when we chase it up, we'll be assuming you are in default before you start.

We've got 72 participants this year. Welcome and thank you to all those taking part in Summergen for the first time!

The assignment email will tell you who your recipient is, what her prompts are and give you a link to her journal.

About the match-ups: The matching is done based mostly on positives, not negatives. That is, we look at what you've said you can do, not what you say you can't. This does not mean you won't receive a prompt or two for characters or genres you didn't include. We wish it were possible to give everyone a perfect match for their offerings and prompts, but it's not. You should receive at least two prompts that match what you offered to write.

Some prompts are very short and cryptic. Where a short prompt doesn't specify a genre, we haven't made assumptions. Where a long-ish prompt doesn't specify a genre, we've used our best guess but your interpretation of the prompt might be very different.

Other prompts are pretty detailed. In these cases, we've tried to match character and time more than genre, on the understanding that the writer who gets it could choose to take the prompt in a different direction from what the promptee intended. You can also put your own spin on many prompts: a prompt for a casefic, for example, could be written as hurt/comfort, darkfic, comedy, angst, deathfic...anything that might blend well with the case.

So not all prompts are going to perfectly fit what you've asked for. What we try to do where people asked for particular consideration was to give prompts you can spin that way. So, for example, if JaneQ said she really wanted to get a Hurt!Dean prompt, we might have given her a set that includes, say, "Sam and Dean are trapped in a snowstorm." We figure JaneQ can throw Hurt!Dean into that situation easily.

Most of all, if you get a prompt set you dislike or can't work with, we beg you not to post publicly about it. Think how your recipient will feel if she sees a post like that. If the mods have screwed up a match-up, it's OUR fault. Complain to US. Better still, don't complain, but let us know you can't do it. You might not be the only one. Sometimes we can arrange a trade and if that's not an option, we WILL find a solution for you.

There's more than a month to go before the deadline of June 30th, so no one panic. But for those over-achievers who are done or nearly done, here are the submission guidelines. You can turn your submission in at any time - early will make the mods really happy :)

First, just in case anyone is confused about this point, you only need to work with one of the prompts you've been given (though mixing two or more is allowed) and you are only expected to submit one story.

The minimum story length is 1,000 words. There is no maximum.
