All the Summergen prompts have been assigned and distributed and are eagerly awaiting creative attention! (BTW, if you have not RSVPed to let us know you got your prompts, please do so now. Thank you for your support. *curtsy*)

If you'd like to write a letter for your Summergen gift creator, you may do so here. Remember, it cannot be friends-locked, or your prompt filler may not be able to see it. Please post your 'Dear Gifter' posts publicly. If a gifter has a specific question for their recipient, you'll need to email that to us at supernaturalsummergen@gmail.com (Please include the username you signed in with and your recipient's username, so we can find you easily.) Have fun, gang!

Hi all! If you write a Dear Writer letter, please post the link in the comments here so your writer can find it!

On a related note, we are getting some questions from writers to pass on to their recipients about their prompts, likes, dislikes, etc. This is great fun, and feel free to pass those inquiries on to us at supernaturalsummergen @ gmail.com. (As I just told someone, it’s like passing notes in class! Awesome.) We have you organized by the username you provided, so in these inquiries, please include your username, your recipient’s username, and what you would like to ask, so we can just copy and paste and don’t have to try to match the inquiry to usernames, e-mail addresses, etc. There are (awesomely!) a lot of you and just one of me (well, there are three of us, but answering inquiries is mostly my job). :-)

Remember: this is an anonymous challenge; don’t do anything to reveal your identity!

ETA: Your Dear Writer post cannot be friends-locked. Chances are your writer won't be able to see it. Please post your Dear Writer posts publicly.

Eager writers, your wait is almost over! Soon you’ll receive your prompts and can begin creating some delicious Summergen fic. Remember, you must respond to the e-mail we send you with your prompts, letting us know you received them. We are in the process of sending out prompts now, so watch your e-mail!

Some of you had a lot to say in your submission form. Some of you might like to say more to the person who’s going to write your fic. I encourage everyone to write a Dear Writer post on your own journal to that end. It’s not required, but your writer will appreciate it. You can thank your writer for working with your prompts, give them more information about what you like and don’t like, and say anything else you forgot to say or didn’t have a slot for on your submission form.

There are links in the comments on this post to Dear Writer letters from last year, if you’re new to this and would like to see examples. It goes without saying, but be polite to your writer in your letter—they’re making you a gift, after all! Also keep flexibility in mind—if you have too many rules or too many passionately stated dislikes, your writer might feel a bit paralyzed by them. Positivity is a plus.

I will make a Dear Writer link-post once all prompts are out. Comment there with a link to your Dear Writer letter.

Refer to this post for more information about writing from prompts.

With 90 participants (NINETY! Go fandom; give yourselves a wild, whooping ovation!) matching is a bit of a challenge, but [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit is doing the matching and she has mad skillz, so I think y’all have a pretty good chance of being inspired by your prompts.

If you don’t love your prompts, first of all, don’t post about it publicly. (Just think how the person who wrote those prompts would feel if they saw your complaints!) Secondly, give it a little time and try to think creatively about how you might work with them, and with the recipient’s likes and dislikes. Remember, you can interpret prompts loosely; you don’t have to follow them to the letter. As we’ve said before, it’s more about embracing your creativity, and not writing something your recipient will hate, than it is an attempt to create the perfect story for them. We all love Supernatural, and we’re sharing that love here, and that’s what matters!

If you’re truly sure you can’t work with your prompts, e-mail us as soon as possible at supernaturalsummergen @ gmail .com (without the spaces). There are options.

Have fun, everyone! :-)

I've been seeing a lot of posts by people excited about the idea of participating in Summergen but nervous about the prospect of writing an exchange fic, writing to a set of prompts, etc. [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver made an excellent post last year that addresses the subject and many other things you may be wondering, so I will here quote liberally from it (with her permission ;-) ). Please read all this!--especially the section titled "Some advice for when you receive your prompts."

What NOT to write )

Some advice for when you receive your prompts )

Most of all, if you get a prompt set you dislike or can't work with, we beg you not to post publicly about it. Think how your recipient will feel if she sees a post like that. Write to us instead, and we will arrange a trade or other solution.

So, in sum: prompts are just jumping-off points to prompt and inspire you, and if you find you absolutely can't work with the prompts you're given, there are solutions!

Again, here is your sign-up form, here is the userinfo page, and here are the FAQs. It's fun seeing all the sign-ups roll in ....

Assignments for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen will be going out any day now! A new post will be made in this community once all assignments have gone out. Please don't contact the mods asking where your assignment is until after that post goes up.

YOU MUST REPLY TO YOUR ASSIGNMENT EMAIL TO LET THE MODS KNOW YOU HAVE RECEIVED IT.

If you don't reply, and we can't contact you when we chase it up, we'll be assuming you are in default before you start.

We've got 72 participants this year. Welcome and thank you to all those taking part in Summergen for the first time!

The assignment email will tell you who your recipient is, what her prompts are and give you a link to her journal.

About the match-ups: The matching is done based mostly on positives, not negatives. That is, we look at what you've said you can do, not what you say you can't. This does not mean you won't receive a prompt or two for characters or genres you didn't include. We wish it were possible to give everyone a perfect match for their offerings and prompts, but it's not. You should receive at least two prompts that match what you offered to write.

Some prompts are very short and cryptic. Where a short prompt doesn't specify a genre, we haven't made assumptions. Where a long-ish prompt doesn't specify a genre, we've used our best guess but your interpretation of the prompt might be very different.

Other prompts are pretty detailed. In these cases, we've tried to match character and time more than genre, on the understanding that the writer who gets it could choose to take the prompt in a different direction from what the promptee intended. You can also put your own spin on many prompts: a prompt for a casefic, for example, could be written as hurt/comfort, darkfic, comedy, angst, deathfic...anything that might blend well with the case.

So not all prompts are going to perfectly fit what you've asked for. What we try to do where people asked for particular consideration was to give prompts you can spin that way. So, for example, if JaneQ said she really wanted to get a Hurt!Dean prompt, we might have given her a set that includes, say, "Sam and Dean are trapped in a snowstorm." We figure JaneQ can throw Hurt!Dean into that situation easily.

If the mods have screwed up a match-up, it's OUR fault. Complain to US. Better still, don't complain, but let us know you can't do it. You might not be the only one. Sometimes we can arrange a trade and if that's not an option, we WILL find a solution for you.
