If anyone is interested in serving as a beta for our Summergen participants, please leave your information in the comments to this post. You do not have to be a registered participant to offer a beta. Thanks in advance, gang!

No, this isn't an A/B/O cutemeet, you sillies! WE'RE ALL ABOUT THE GEN.

But what we do need is folks who'd be willing to beta for our intrepid gifters, both art and fic.

If you'd like to volunteer to serve as a beta, please post below, and list any restrictions you may have. (triggers, word count or time limits, etc.)

If you're in need of a beta, please respond to the offer here as well, so others know how potentially busy that particular beta may be.

It's been requested that we post a sign-up for betas ... so here we are! If you're interested in being one or our most coveted of assistants, leave your LJ name and a way to be contacted--request to either be PMed or supply an email--so that folks can take advantage of your kind services! Also specify which media you're willing to beta, please. And thank you!

No, I’m not calling anyone a ho. ;-) I’m posting to remind you that the time is nigh! You have just over a week until the deadline. So those in need of a beta, consult this post and/or the two Supernatural beta communities, [livejournal.com profile] spn_beta and [livejournal.com profile] spn_betas. I hope your creative juices are flowing, your typin’ fingers are flying, and you’re all as excited as I am!

Which brings me to (drum roll please!)…

J2-omg

We now have enough fic submissions to begin posting early! You will see the first fic tomorrow. HURRAY SUMMERGEN, and bless the wonderful folks who submitted early!

Um, there is one slightly awkward caveat. The deadline for submissions is July 15. If you need an extension, you must request it by that date. However, you do have a one-week grace period; you will not be considered in default unless you don’t submit your fic by July 22nd. That means that if everyone uses the grace period, we won’t have fics to post the week of the 15th. :-} If that happens I’ll be all:

puppy-eyes

So I’m really hoping most of you finish by July 15th. BUT NO PRESSURE. ;-)

It is an absolute delight to see the fics roll in, and I can’t wait to see ALL the deliciousness y’all have cooked up to satisfy our Hellatus hunger. Starting tomorrow. Whoo hoo! See you there!

Hello intrepid fashioners of fic! Finished (or nearly) with your own Summergen fic? Were you unable to commit to the challenge, but are now just watching and waiting for those stellar stories to start appearing, and wishing you could do a bit more? How about being a beta? You need not be a participant in the challenge to contribute in this way! Betas are better than Batman. ;-)

If you’re willing to preview someone’s Summergen fic and offer them constructive feedback on it before they submit it for posting, please leave a comment here indicating your availability. Note: We have participants in need of betas who do not have an LJ, so if you are willing to leave your e-mail address in the comments for these users to contact you, that would be very helpful. To avoid spambots, put spaces in, e.g. : supernaturalsummergen @ gmail .com

Similarly, if you need a beta, post your request in the comments here! (Be careful what you say about your fic, since this is anonymous! Leave the details for your beta to ask about via e-mail or PM.) If you’ve got your ideas down and just need some help with fine-tuning, or a second set of eyes to polish the grammar, a beta is an invaluable resource. Remember, if your fic is riddled with errors, the mods reserve the right to return it to you to fix. We know you want to put the best possible story out there, and a beta can help you do that.

Suggested information to include in your beta comment:

My Summergen username:
My e-mail address:
I’m willing to beta a fic up to this long:
I need this much time before the deadline to beta a fic:
I can’t beta a fic containing:
My strengths as a beta are:

(Examples of answers to the last question include grammar/writing mechanics, characterization, canon compliance, etc.).

Let the mods know if you have any questions! Happy editing!

Okay, people, we're already getting submissions, so I guess it's time to make this post! Don't freak out--you still have until July 15 to complete your Summergen story, but I know some of you are early birds (yay!), you've already written that sucker and are eager to send it in, so here's the how:

Submission Guidelines

-You must submit your story in .txt or .rtf format. We cannot accept .doc or .docx files.

-Your story must already be formatted for posting on lj, including all necessary html tags (such as for centering, bolding, etc.). Here's a cool post that will tell you how to do that.

-If your fic is longer than 9,000 words, you'll have to split it up into sections, each of which is 9,000 words or fewer, because lj has a word limit. Please send the sections to us as separate files or indicate very clearly within your story where you want the split(s). Remember, your story must be at least 1,000 words, but there is no upward limit; it can be as long as you like.

-No fancy formatting such as special fonts or colors, lest they be unreadable for others due to their journal style or the device they're reading on. The other usual formatting options lj allows, such as bold, italics, or font size, are fine, though. It might be a good idea to first test your coding by posting it as a private entry on your own lj exactly as you plan to submit it--this will give you a chance to fix any errors before it's too late.

-You may include art with your fic! Send us the file in .jpg, .png, or .gif format (but send the whole file, not just a link to it), and clearly indicate where each image should go in your story.

-Please have your fic betaed! Stories riddled with errors will be returned.

-Do not code web-bugs or counters into your story.

-You must include the following header in both your story document and in the e-mail you send to us. Here is the header information to include:

Title:
Author:
(We'll remove this before your work is posted, but we still need you to include it.)
Recipient:
Rating:
Warnings:
(not optional - see note below)
Author's Notes: (optional)

Summary:

Ratings: you can use any rating system you like, as long as the meaning is clear.

Warnings are at your discretion. You can choose not to warn, but do include the field--just say "choose not to warn," or "none" if you don't feel your fic requires any warnings. Some people nowadays are also putting warnings behind a spoiler cut (here's how to do that) if they feel the warnings or other tags might spoil parts of the fic; feel free to do that, too.

If you're having a hard time coming up with your summary, you can use the prompt you're working from, use a quote from the work, etc., but please do include something in the summary field.

You can include more fields if you like. Just remember not to reveal your identity. For example, if you feel naming your beta will give away who you are, please don't!

Also, please give your story file a name a bit more unique than "summergenfic.txt". You wouldn't believe how many files of the same name we get each year! It really makes downloading them all a pain in the butt. (Yes, I know, it's easy to change the file name. But we have 90 files--you've got one. Be nice, okay?)

You can only submit your fic once, so make sure it's right before you send it in! That said, the earlier the better--it'll be easier on the mods if we don't get all the fics on deadline day, and we'd like to start posting fics as soon as possible. We will e-mail you to let you know when we've received your story, but if you submit on or close to the deadline, don't expect to receive that acknowledgement instantly--we're going to be busy!

Once again, a link to the FAQs. Any other questions? Ask in the comments, or e-mail us at supernaturalsummergen @ gmail . com (remove the spaces).

Do you feel that? That's the approach of the start of Summergen fic posting--it's getting closer! YES!

All stories submitted for Summergen must be beta'd.

In case anyone doesn't know what that means, a beta is someone who reads through the story you've written, helps to correct any spelling and grammatical errors (particularly important if English is not your first language) and, in some cases, gives more in-depth advice on the story.

You can find a beta via several SPN communities, or you may already have someone who regularly betas for you. That's fine: you can use any beta you want to.

If you need help finding a beta, please comment here. Likewise, if you're willing to offer beta services to others, please leave a comment, or hook up with someone who is asking.
[identity profile] briarwood.livejournal.com
This post is for anyone taking part in Summergen who is willing to act as a beta reader and/or needs one.

If you're available to beta, please comment and briefly state the kind of things you can do e.g. English/grammar/spelling, particular character voices, Ameripick etc. and how writers can get in touch with you.

If you're volunteering to beta I recommend you track this post so you'll see any requests that come in.

If you need a beta, please either read through the comments and contact a volunteer, or add a new comment to state the kind of beta you need. Don't give away too much about your fic, but you can state character/genre if you need to.

If you comment to request a beta, please remember to comment again when you've found one, so those tracking the post will know.

One of the rules of [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen is fics must be beta-read. There are lots of places you can find a beta: [livejournal.com profile] spn_betas is a great community, and a request for help from your friends list is also a good place to start.

But just in case an alternative is needed, this post will collect details for anyone who wants to volunteer as a beta for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen stories.

Writers, if you think you might need a beta I recommend you bookmark or track this post so you can come back here when you need to.

If you are willing to beta, please comment with the following information:

Name:
How would you prefer to be contacted? e.g. email address, LJ message, comment - your call.
What kind of help can you offer? e.g. grammar/spelling, characterisation, Brit-picking, etc.
What characters/genres do you prefer?
Any restrictions: Anything you can't or won't look at (e.g. will not read death fics)
