Title: The Road to Gettysburg

Author’s note: For the prompt - American Civil War.  Dean Campbell, a predecessor of Sam and Dean, is a young soldier alone and afraid with his dying horse, when he knocks on Cain's door and begs for shelter.

Summary: Dean Campbell knows his faithful Baby is dying; he knows what he has to do. There isn’t enough rain in the world to wash away the tears as he draws his revolver and puts it to Baby’s head. The noise of the shot deafens him.

In their cozy living room, Colette startles when they hear gunfire outside. Cain stands, grabs his coat and hat before he shoulders the rifle. Colette doesn’t speak, just gives her husband a look, and reluctantly he hangs the rifle back on the wall before venturing out into the pouring rain to investigate. She doesn’t know he has the First Blade tucked inside his leather coat.

Cain doesn’t need the blade.  He finds a young Union cavalryman, blind with grief, weeping over his dead horse.
